Human Environment Specialist

Canada North Environmental Services (CanNorth) is an established First Nation-owned environmental services firm with an impeccable track record and a highly respected reputation. CanNorth is 100% owned by Kitsaki Management Limited Partnership, the business arm of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. CanNorth has a proven expertise in communication and trust building between Indigenous, local communities, and industrial developments, and is looking to increase capacity in the Human Environment Division.

CanNorth is seeking a highly motivated person to work with our talented and multidisciplinary team in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Responsibilities in this position will include:

• Designing, implementing, and reporting on engagement activities including applying engagement results to decision making processes.
• Familiarity with the Duty to Consult process.
• Leading development and reporting of socio-economic, community health, and land use studies using Indigenous knowledge, local knowledge, and western science as part of provincial and federal impact assessment, sustainability reporting requirements, and other decision-making frameworks.
• Supporting design and facilitation of community-led research and policy development.
• Developing clear language materials, reports, and presentations.
• Project management and client communication.

Requirements:
• A university degree in the social or environmental sciences or related discipline.
• Around 5-10 years of relevant work experience.
• Excellent research, written, and communication skills.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license.
• Field work and travel (including remote or isolated areas) is required.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines working independently with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment.

A certificate in IAP2 Foundations for Public Participation and experience with grant writing is considered an asset.

Environmental Monitor

CanNorth has a strong foundation and proven expertise in environmental assessments and environmental monitoring and is looking to increase its capacity in its Biology Division.

CanNorth is seeking a highly motivated and experienced environmental monitor to work with our talented and innovative multidisciplinary team in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Responsibilities in this position will include:
• Ensuring compliance with all environment permits, regulatory requirements, legislation, government approvals, and project environmental protection plans.
• Implementation of environmental field studies (e.g., environmental assessments, mitigation plans, etc.).
• Environmental field support during construction activities (may include, but not be limited to, conducting breeding bird surveys, nest sweeps, amphibian salvages, wetland delineation, weed identification, rare plant identification, biosecurity protocols).
• Liaising with contractors and clients at construction sites (e.g., kickoff/tailgate meetings, BMPs).
• Data collection and management.
• Completing daily reports and safety documentation in a timely manner.

Requirements:
• A minimum of 2 years of past experience in environmental consulting is required.
• Good knowledge of the environmental management process regarding planning, approvals, construction, mitigation, and reclamation.
• Post-secondary degree or diploma in environmental or biological sciences.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Be willing/able to be away for extended periods of time (approx. 3-21 days per trip).
• Field work will regularly require working in rugged terrain; strong outdoor skills, experience working in remote areas, and experience operating trucks with loaded trailers, ATVs, and snowmobiles is an asset.
• Safety certifications such as First Aid, ATV, and /or UTV is considered part of a good foundation.

The applicant must have superior communication skills; be able to correspond with clients and contractors in a professional way; be a team player; be highly motivated and have a positive attitude. Direct experience monitoring construction of linear developments such as oil/gas pipelines or transmission lines and potentially relevant training courses such as erosion and sediment control and environmental monitoring are considered an asset. Certification in First Aid and past experience operating a variety of field equipment (e.g., trucks, trailers, ATVs, UTVs) is also considered part of a good foundation. Ideally applicants have status as a biology professional (P. Biol.) and/or eligibility for accreditation through a professional biology organization such as the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.

Archaeologist

Canada North Environmental Services (CanNorth) is a private environmental consulting firm that has been in business for over 20 years and during this time has built a reputation as a reliable and reputable environmental services provider. Our experienced, interdisciplinary team uses technical skills and knowledge to protect the environment, satisfy regulatory requirements, and support local communities.

CanNorth regularly completes HRIAs and HRIA-Ms for resource developments in the oil and gas, mining, roads and infrastructure, aggregate, energy, and forestry sectors and we are currently looking to hire a permit holder archaeologist to work with our talented and innovative team in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Responsibilities in this position will include:
• HRIA fieldwork including mitigation, pre and post-impact studies, construction monitoring, and baseline surveys, including knowledge of appropriate guidelines and techniques.
• Heritage site evaluation, including assessment and site recording.
• Artifact and feature identification.
• Laboratory duties such as artifact cleaning, analysis, and cataloging.
• Permit applications.
• Technical report writing and research.
• Assist with project planning as required (often from inception to execution of field work through to report preparation).

Requirements:
• You must have a graduate degree in archaeology or anthropology and be able to hold an archaeological permit in the province of Saskatchewan (permit holding capabilities in Manitoba and Alberta would be an asset).
• Good knowledge of government guidelines, protocols, and regulations, as well as provincial legislation.
• Experience planning and executing archaeology projects.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Fieldwork and travel (including remote or isolated areas) is required.
• Be willing/able to work in adverse weather and challenging field conditions.
