Summer Student – Environment Monitor at Cameco’s Rabbit Lake Operation

Cameco Corporation (Cameco) is one of the largest global providers of the fuel needed to energize a clean-air world. Cameco owns and operates the Rabbit Lake Operation, which was the longest operating uranium mine in North America before being placed into care and maintenance in 2016. The facility is located approximately 750 kilometers north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the Athabasca Basin.

CanNorth is seeking two highly motivated students to work at the Rabbit Lake Operation under the direct supervision of Cameco’s Environment Department. The summer students will work a 2-week rotational schedule and commute to and from site by aircraft. Pick-up locations include Saskatoon, Prince Albert, La Ronge, Buffalo Narrows, Pinehouse, Patuanak, Hatchet Lake Denesųłiné First Nation, Wollaston Lake Post, Stony Rapids, Fond du Lac Denesųłiné First Nation, Cumberland House, Flin Flon, and Uranium City.

Responsibilities in this position will include:

  • Environment field support (e.g., collection of groundwater and surface water samples, collection of air quality samples, completion of environmental inspections, wildlife monitoring and management, etc.).
  • Assisting with data entry, management, and QA/QC
  • Assisting with field equipment maintenance and organization.

Applicants should have a keen interest in biology or physical sciences and must have a valid driver’s license. The successful applicant will be a team player, highly motivated, organized, and reliable. Field work will require working in rugged and/or remote terrain; driving ATVs/UTVs, trucks, and boats; and the ability to be away from home for an extended period (a total of four 2-week shifts spaced between May 9th and August 29th, 2026). Previous watercraft and ATV/UTV operating experience, first aid and ATV/UTV certifications, a pleasure craft operator card, and/or a possession and acquisition license with firearms experience are considered an asset.

Junior Aquatic Biologist

CanNorth is seeking a highly motivated aquatic biologist to work with our talented and innovative multidisciplinary team in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Responsibilities in this position will include:

  • Assisting with aquatic field surveys (such as water, sediment, plankton, benthic invertebrate, and fish sampling) for a variety of project types including baseline studies, Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Effects Monitoring, and others
  • Environmental monitoring for a variety of projects including power, pipelines, and construction projects
  • Conducting fish salvages for construction projects
  • Assisting with data management, QA/QC, and analyses and the preparation of technical reports
  • Assisting with field equipment maintenance
  • Liaising with clients and contractors in a professional manner
  • Working with First Nations and regulatory agencies

Applicants should have a degree or diploma related to aquatic biology and good knowledge of aquatic ecology in western Canada as well as techniques used to sample the aquatic environment. The successful applicant must be a team player, highly motivated and organized, able to work with a range of personalities, and have a positive attitude. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license. This position entails a substantial amount of field work; thus, applicants must be willing/able to be away for extended periods of time. Field work will regularly require working in rugged terrain; strong outdoor skills, experience working in remote areas, and experience operating trucks with loaded trailers, ATV’s, boats, and snowmobiles is an asset. Previous experience working at an environmental consulting firm in a field position will be considered a strong asset.

Botanist / Environmental Monitor

CanNorth is seeking a highly motivated field botanist / Environmental Monitor to work with our talented and innovative multidisciplinary team in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Responsibilities in this full-time position will include:

  • Conducting plant identification and inventory surveys, rare plant surveys, weed surveys, rangeland and riparian health assessments, and forest ecosite classification.
  • Conducting field work independently, as a crew member, or as a crew lead.
  • Environmental site evaluations, including identifying site characteristics such as habitat, dominant vegetation, presence of weedy/invasive species, topography, etc..
  • Classification of wetlands/riparian areas.
  • Environmental monitoring for a variety of projects including power, pipelines, and construction projects.
  • Assist with project planning as required (often from inception to execution of field work through to report preparation); this often requires experience conducting initial desktop environmental screenings.
  • Technical writing (to include composing smaller screening memos to larger reports) and research skills.
  • Assist with restoration and/or reclamation planning, including seed mix development.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, or related natural sciences; however, a technical diploma may be acceptable if the applicant has previous experience relevant experience in a consulting environment or related industry.
  • Knowledge of government guidelines and protocols as well as provincial and federal regulations (in particular relating to species of conservation concern).
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, be dedicated to high quality results, and use their creative thinking to find solutions to complex problems.

Archaeologist

  • You must have a graduate degree in archaeology or anthropology and be able to hold an archaeological permit in the province of Saskatchewan (permit holding capabilities in Manitoba and Alberta would be an asset).
  • Good knowledge of government guidelines, protocols, and regulations, as well as provincial legislation.
  • Experience planning and executing archaeology projects.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Fieldwork and travel (including remote or isolated areas) is required.
  • Be willing/able to work in adverse weather and challenging field conditions.

Junior Archaeologist - Seasonal

  • Supporting archaeologists and providing assistance where needed.
  • Laboratory duties such as artifact cleaning, analysis, and cataloging.
  • Other office duties.
  • Helping in the warehouse with equipment, maintenance, mobilizing/demobilizing trucks (when needed).

Requirements:

  • Pursuing or recently completed a university degree (undergraduate or graduate) in archaeology or anthropology (or other associated discipline).
  • Minimum 4 months of archaeological field experience (or the successful completion of a recognized archaeological field school).
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to complete field work and travel (including remote or isolated areas) with overnight stays for multiple days during out-of-town projects.
  • Must enjoy working outdoors and be willing to work in adverse weather and challenging field conditions.
